Common Questions & Answers

What is taxidermy? Taxidermy is the art of reproducing a life-like mount of an animal. In many cases the actual skin, fur, feathers, or scales are used in the mount.

Do you really "stuff" animals? No, we reproduce the animal, normally using a foam form as the mould. The hide of the actual animal is normally used to cover the form. Glass eyes are used along with wax or epoxy lips and nose.

I live out of town, how do I get my mount to you and get it back? You may ship your trophy to us overnight. We will notify you as soon as we recieve it. Once complete we will carefully crate and ship your mount to you. For shipping information, see our shipping page.

Why are saltwater fish usually just replications? Saltwater fish begin deteriation the moment they are pulled from the water. It is best to take good pictures of the fish, get accurate measurments and release the fish. A life-size replication can be made from the measurements and photographs.

Can damaged mounts be fixed? In most cases, yes.

What kind of salt to do use on my hide? Non-iodized salt. Never use rock salt.

How do I clean my hide/mount? See our Cleaning Tips page.

What do I do before I bring my trophy to you for mounting? See our Field Tips page.

How soon will my animal spoil? Decomposition starts immediately upon death. Temperature greatly affects the rate at which it will decompose. Freezing will allow the trophy to be kept longer periods of time before bringing to the taxidermist.

Why does it take so long to get my mount back? The process of creating your mount is a detailed process that involves various steps and procedures. The taxidermist wants to take the time and effort to make your trophy as life-like as possible. Thank you for being patient and understanding.
